The Echills Wood Railway (EWR) is run entirely by volunteers. These volunteers come from all walks of life and bring diverse skills to our railway. The one thing they all have in common is a love of railways. In addition, they all like being amongst a group of like-minded individuals dedicated to maintaining our national heritage.

Many of our members build and or operate their very own steam, electric, and petrol/diesel driven locomotives, others continue to use the skills learnt by maintaining the track or rolling stock. Others prefer to work on the public face of the railway by helping out as Station Staff or manning the ticket office, maybe you have the skills to run and maintain this web site or be one of Santa’s helpers at Christmas, general, whatever your background or skill level you can contribute to the running of one of the UK’s premier Seven and a Quarter inch gauge railways.

Initially, you can join the railway as an Associate member for which there is an annual charge.

Full membership to the railway is offered to all Associate members who have demonstrated an ongoing commitment by attending to operate or maintain the railway.

Persons between the ages of 12 and 16 can join as a Junior member, although you won’t be able to drive passenger trains or guard until you reach 16 years of age, you will receive a firm grounding in all aspect of railway operation.

Prospective and interested new members should make a personal visit to the railway and contact  the Membership Secretary or the Hon Secretary.

If you are unable to commit to work on the railway but feel that you would like to support our operation, you can make a donation either by way of money or goods, details of how can be obtained by using Contact Us form - Department General Enquiries
